Fortunate Ones is a contemporary folk duo from Newfoundland. Celebrated for their harmony-entwined songs of hope, resilience, and the human condition and their joyfully disarming live shows, they have toured relentlessly, bringing their open-hearted performances to thousands of people across North America and beyond.

Catherine and Andrew have been busy since the release of their debut album The Bliss in 2015 - thousands of miles, hundreds of shows, award winning albums and scores of fans have all been hallmarks of the success the duo has experienced since their humble beginnings in St. John’s. The Bliss was nominated for a JUNO Award and landed two #1 singles on CBC Radio 2’s Top 20.

On their sophomore album Hold Fast, the title track hit #1 on the CBC Music Top 20 Chart. The album also took home three Music NL Awards in 2018, was nominated for four East Coast Music Awards, and the 2019 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year. To date, songs from Hold Fast have over 16 million streams on Spotify.

Fortunate Ones released That Was You and Me in 2022 and embarked on the Anchor’s Up Tour with The Once and Old Man Luedecke across Canada.

————————

The following excerpt of information was gathered on the Wolf Moon of Jan ‘22. Extracted from an interview of Newfoundland & Labrador-born Improvisor, Guitarist, and Songwriter R.C. Stanley - By Poet J.G. Lutes. (The conscious effort to foster their friendship was noted.)

JGL - What would you like the reader to take from this?

RCS - That I hail from St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, currently inhabiting the foggy southern shores of Nova Scotia. I’ve studied, and I’ve been working in the music industry for “twenty-plus years.” Truth is: I have performed with three Juno Award winners (Amelia Curran, Tom Cochrane and Matt Mays) as an accompanying guitarist. Most frequently collaborating/performing with friends and recording artists Matt Mays and Adam Baldwin. Performed at the SXSW festival (TX), the Bowery Ballroom (NYC), Massey Hall and the National Arts Centre of Canada. I am an aspiring songwriter and just released my debut single: Deadbeat Story (Following Me).

Halifax Bloggers called it: “Bluesy Dylan-esque folky fare” after a debut performance of original works at HUFF ‘21 (The Carleton, Halifax).

Others have said: “Stanley delivers songs that hail from a “classic” “folk rock” “revival” school of writing with a safe, colourful dose of psychedelia. Flares of rocky shore Canadiana, singing lyrical wordplay steeped in truth and thick foggy mystery.

JGL - Do you like guitar solos?

RCS - Next question.

JGL - Have you been in an airplane?

RCS - Yes.

JGL - Denim or leather?

RCS - One over the other.

JGL - Is anything real?

RCS - Not yet.

(R.C. Stanley, J.G. Lutes ‘22)
